Common Narcissistic Abuse Tactics

While every relationship is different, certain themes show up repeatedly in narcissistic abuse, such as:

  • Gaslighting: Making you doubt your memory, perception, or sanity.

    • “You’re remembering it wrong, that’s not what I said. You always twist the things I say.”

    • “You’re too sensitive; that didn’t even happen the way you think it did.”

  • Love Bombing & Devaluation: Alternating between overwhelming affection and cruel withdrawal.

    • You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me; I can’t live without you.” (later followed by) “You’re nothing without me, no one else would ever put up with you.”

  • Control & Manipulation: Monitoring your choices, guilt-tripping, or making you feel you can never “do enough.”

    • “Why would you want to hang out with them? They don’t really care about you like I do.”

    • “After everything I’ve done for you, this is how you treat me?”

    • “You should really be grateful.”

  • Silent Treatment: Withholding affection or communication as punishment.

    • Refuses to respond for days after a disagreement, leaving you guessing what you did wrong.

    • “I don’t feel like talking to you until you figure out how to fix this.”

  • Deception & Betrayal: Lying, cheating, or breaking promises without accountability.

    • “I never said I’d be home; you must have imagined that.”

    • “It was just a joke, you’re overreacting. It didn’t mean anything.”

  • Projection: Blaming you for the very behaviors the abuser is engaging in.

    • “You’re the one who’s always lying, not me.” (while actively lying to you)

    • “You’re so controlling, you never let me do anything I want.” (while monitoring your every move)
